1. Water Dispersible Products

U.S. Patent 8,569,402 (October 29, 2013), “Mouldable Biodegradable Polymer,” Rulande Henderson, Ian John Partridge, Elizabeth Emily Rose, and Nicholas Roy Oakley (Plantic Technologies Ltd., Altona, Victoria, Australia).

Disposable materials such as  tampon applicators should be water flushable, water dispersible and biodegradable.  Starches are desirable but difficult to process by common processes such as injection molding.  Henderson et al developed a biodegradable injection moldable material consisting of a) 50 to 85 wt% starch,  b) 4 to 13 wt% water soluble polyvinylacetate, polyvinyl alcohol or ethylene /vinylalcohol copolymers, c) 10 to 35 wt% polyol plasticizer, d) 0.5 to 10 wt% polyethylene oxide or polyethylene glycol,  e) 0 to 1.5 wt%  C12-22 fatty acid or salt, and f) 0.25 to 3 wt% of a food grade emulsifier.

Notes

1. Superabsorbent polymers are based on acrylic acid or acrylates are not biodegradable and, therefore,  not environmentally friendly.   

Furno, Schmidt and  De Bruin  of Evonik Degussa, Germany, developed a biodegradable superabsorbent polymer by adding starch to the monomer mixture during polymerization of the superabsorbent polymer.
